Be realistic about comfort and confidence too. A small car used daily has to start, stop and drive without worry. If you would still avoid longer journeys after the repair, that tells you something about its real value.
Think About Private Sale Honestly
Some owners consider selling privately instead of scrapping. That may be possible for a repairable car, but a failed MOT, unsafe fault or expensive estimate narrows the buyer pool. You may face viewings, haggling, transport questions and responsibility for explaining the faults clearly.
For many low-value cars, disposal is simpler than trying to find a buyer who wants the repair risk. That does not mean scrap return is high. It means the route is clean, especially when the car cannot be sensibly driven.
Keep The Vehicle Easy To Collect
If you decide to stop spending, do not let the car deteriorate while you debate it. Keep the keys safe, leave the wheels on, avoid removing parts without checking the effect on price, and keep it where recovery can reach it.
Tell the buyer whether it starts, rolls, steers and brakes. Mention the MOT failure and any repair estimates. If the car is in a tight driveway or on a busy street, send access photos before booking collection.
Let The Numbers End The Argument
Small cars can be hard to let go because they feel useful even when they are tired. The numbers help. If the repair bill is close to the car's value after repair, and the car still carries other risks, it may have reached its limit.
Repair it if the result is a trustworthy little car. Scrap it if the spend only keeps an uncertain vehicle alive for another few months. A clear decision is usually better than another round of small bills that quietly become one big one.
